Task 1:

The graph below shows the number of overseas visitors who came to UK for different purposes between 1989 and 2009.

The graph gives information of the number of foreign visitors travelling to UK for three diverse purposes from 1989 to 2009.

Throughout the two decades, spending holiday was the major purpose for visitors to British and the number of foreign tourists kept rising, from just above 6 million to the peak of nearly 9 million in 1999. Despite a dip to 7 million in 2004, it bounced back to the 1998 figure in 2009.

The other two minor reasons for visiting England were for business and for friends and relatives and they both showed a general upward tendency. To be specific, in 1989, the number of foreign businessmen and friends or relatives visitors were about 5.5 million and 3.7 million respectively. After four years of opposite trends, both figures reached 4 million in 1993. Then they climbed simultaneously, arriving at 7 million in 2004. The last five years saw fluctuation in the number of business visitors between 8m and 7m, while a decline in that of friends and relative visitors to 6 million in 2009.

Overall, the total number of visitors travelling to UK for three different purposes increased significantly from around 15 million to 22 million between 1989 and 2009.

范文:

Life learning may be no longer a personal choice in this rapidly changing world. Many adults find that they have to study some practical skills many years after graduation from school such as computer skills which obviously have to be grasped if they want to keep up-to-date with their job. However, should they study by themselves or go back to class, with the guidance of a teacher? I personally recognize both.

Indeed adults are more capable to study alone than children. They have accumulated some basic knowledge and theories and developed their own way of study. For example, those with fundamental math knowledge and logic thinking may be able to self-study computer skills with the help of some reference books. Another advantage of adults over children is their self-discipline which can make sure their study concentration relatively. Sometimes adults learn by themselves because of their personal commitment and domestic responsibilities which do not allow them to take a full time course in school.

However, self-study cannot compare with traditional style in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. With the demonstration and instruction of an experienced teacher, study process would take less time than self-learning and the learning outcome would be more ensured and enhanced. Take learning a foreign language as an example, it is more likely to be efficient to take a course in a classroom where practice with other students in real life is nurtured. In some cases, practising some skills may require some equipment like driving and the operation can be dangerous if not properly conducted.

In conclusion, I think that which style of learning practical skills for an adult to adopt depends on personal situation and the skills obtained. I prefer to be with a teacher, which is optimal, but under some circumstances where physical attendance is not allowed, then self-learning is also pragmatic.
