范文:

The data given illustrate the labour force allocation in six industries in 1999 and 2009.

In 1999, manufacturing employed the largest proportion of work force at 15%. Retail ranked the second of the list, hiring 11.8% of the total labour force, which was followed by healthcare with the percentage of 9.6. Fewer people worked in construction (7.6%), education (6.8%) or tourism (5.5%) in comparison.

However, in 2009, the labour distribution changed in all these industries. On the one hand, the proportion of people involved in manufacturing and retail reduced to 9.8% and 10.7% respectively. On the other hand, the percentages in the other four fields increased to different extents. To be specific, there was a growth in healthcare recruitment, to 11.3% of national workforce, which means that healthcare had become the most labour-intensive sector. The same year also witnessed an expanded employment in the other three industries, with each accounting for over 7%.

From the chart it can be concluded that labours concentration was shifting from manufacturing and retail to healthcare during the decade from 1999 to 2009.

Some people believe that studying in a college or university is the best way for students to prepare for their future career. Others think they should leave school as soon as possible to develop their career through work experience.

Some people think that a large proportion of young people should go to university; however, others think that we should encourage them to become car mechanics, builders etc to meet the needs of the community. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. (2009.09.05)

Nowadays, it is widely accepted that social skills are as important as good qualifications for success in a job. Do you agree or disagree? (2012.01.14)

The qualities a person needs to become successful in today’s world cannot be learned at a university or any similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2011.09.03)

Some people believe that theoretical subjects (such as mathematics, philosophy and economy) should not be taught in university because universities should focus on practical subjects (such as marketing, computer programming and accounting). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people believe that studying in a college or university is the best way for students to prepare for their successful career. However, others prefer to get a job as soon as leave school to develop their career through work experience. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Under the fierce competition of job hunting, people have long been doubtful about the contribution of college or university education to career success.

On campus, people have much more exposure to theoretical knowledge, which does help students to gain a full understanding of concepts and principles of different subjects and prepares them to be experts in some field.   2. In fact, it is widely recognized that theoretical knowledge, which mainly taught in university, also has practical implications.

Admittedly, job experience equips people with significant lessons that have not been emphasized on in school, and social network is a case in point. However, without comprehensive and scientific view of a certain subject, people feel hard to solve problems in work effectively and efficiently. In other words, lack of expertise becomes the very barricade on their way to career success.

I am not denying that there are quite some success stories of people without college education. Meanwhile, we can also tell that in such a knowledge-oriented society, such cases are rarer to be witnessed. Therefore, it is more advisable for people, if given chances, to enter colleges and universities before starting their jobs.

Go to work

Go to university

1 higher demand for occupational workers2 early to gain working experience and social skills

2 higher payment

范文:

School leavers always have to make such decision whether to go to university or an occupational college so as to start working as soon as possible. Which road is more likely to lead to a brightprospect of career?

Most people would favor higher education, with some undeniable arguments. Firstly university students are equipped with both practical and theoretical knowledge and skills which areconsidered to better prepare them for their future career. The reason is that degree holders tend to see things in a bigger picture due to the systematic thinking trained in theoretical subjectswhich are basically what differentiates higher education from vocational one. Theory learning also gives university students a competitive edge in adapting to the rapid technological advancein modern world. This flexibility and thinking abilities may explain why undergraduates are generally better paid at work. It seems that a decent academic qualification can guarantee a decent job. However, this does not mean (that) tertiary education is the only way to a successful career. Occupational education is believed to better satisfy the variety of needs in a society. When most people choose to be professionals, leaving fewer to be car mechanics or builders, technical workers are in increasing demand. As a result, they are now paid well, in some cases even better than a professional. In addition, starting working early means accumulated working and social experience, which are highly valued by many employers who would expect cost saving of job training, effective communication and high working efficiency. Other qualities possessed by a skilled worker such as a mature manner to deal with complex issues can mainly be achieved in adynamic working condition.

My own opinion is that in any society there is demand for workers at different levels from professional to technical to non-skilled, and therefore anyone can find his or her position. In other words, either going to university or attending a vocational college can be a wise choicedepending on one’s interest or personal traits. Only when one is doing a job he or she has passion for, can he or she achieve the best performance. As an old Chinese saying goes, ‘every profession produces its own topmost master’.
