根据上下文推测词义是阅读理解中较为容易的部分。基本上，这类问题要求考生推测特定上下文中词语的意思。例如：
I worked up a storm today!
A terrible storm threatened our community.
这两句话中的"Storm"意思是不同的。
怎样区别这个词的不同含义？当然是要看这个单词所在的句子。第一句话中的"Storm"显然雨天气无关，而其二句话中的"Storm"则指的是天气。
SAT中的这类问题会比上面的例子更难，但确是在阅读部分较容易得分的问题。
Three-step strategy for vocab-in-context questions:
1. 仔细阅读单词所在的句子。
2. 辨别词义，想出一个同义词。
3. 根据想出的同义词在选项中找出答案。
根据上下文推测词义是SAT阅读中较为容易的一类问题，题目会类似于：
On line 7, "construction" most nearly means:
首先要找到第7行，定位"construction"所在的句子，并阅读整句话。这一点非常重要，因为如果仅仅读第7行，得到的信息可能不完善，或是错误的。
例如：7 construction is actually quite complex.
第7行的这句话并不完整，你可能会想到construction的不同意思，但整句话可能会是：
5 Even though people find foreign languages
6 very difficult to learn, English
7 construction is actually quite complex.
因此，再次强调一下，读完整句话是非常重要的。在定位词语并读完句子后，就可以进入第二步，找出同义词。在这句话中，construction的意思是指英文的规则及结构，一次就可以想出一个同义词：structure.
现在我们来看一下整个问题，然后进行第三步：
On line 7, "construction" most nearly means:
A. edification
B. building
C. composition
D. assembly
E. comprehension
接下来我们就要在选项中找到与structure意义相近的词，只有"composition"与之意思相似。虽然"building"也是structure的一种，但building值得是建筑物，因此不能选。
下面我们在来看一个例子：

首先，找到原文：
43 And it wasn't until then that I

然后，找出近义词： "high-spirited" 或 "angry"。
在选项中找到意义相近的词。最佳选项为：C.passionate。
