Through green aviation, our first new initiative in a decade, NASA is helping overhaul the United States air transportation system to create safer, greener and more effective travel for everyone.

Our green aviation goals are to expand the capacity of our national airspace system, enable fuel-efficient flight planning, and reduce the overall environmental footprint of aircraft in fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

NASA aeronautics' five programs conduct fundamental, cutting-edge research into new aircraft technologies as well as new operations concepts for takeoff, cruise and approach/landing that conserve time and fuel. We also manage a portfolio of wind tunnels and other testing facilities (icing, propulsion), as well as flight research and support aircraft at different NASA centers around the country.

We focus on developing tools and technologies that will integrate safely and efficiently with the national airspace system and transition smoothly to industry to become new products.

NASA has made decades of contributions to aviation. We continue to develop solutions to benefit the flying public every day.
