Breathe, okay, deep breaths, one, and two, there you go. You might be hearing yourself, or someone tell you this during orientation, your first real glimpse at college as a college student. Don’t feel bad if you’re nervous, it’s perfectly normal. Honestly, orientation isn’t that big of a deal once you get settled.

A lot of people feel nervous during orientation, I did. I was nervous because, finally, I had arrived at this place that was supposed to offer me the rest of my life. That was it, the beginning of the end for my childhood and my teenage years. It marked the beginning of my young adult life. It also didn’t help that orientation was held at 8 AM in the morning and I didn’t get much sleep the night before. I also had to drive over 60 miles to get to campus, it was the first time I been there. But you won’t make that mistake right?

At my orientation there were bagels, coffee, the usual breakfast snacks, it was nice. All of us freshman or transfer students gathered up in a large hall and the presentation began. The speakers most likely mentioned the campus’ history, traditions, their excitement at having all of us there, general stuff. I had a hard time paying attention because I was baffled at the entire situation, as mentioned before, also by the guy sitting next to me, a very large, middle-aged man, probably the oldest student at the orientation. He had a tattoo on his face that garnered a lot of attention along with his long 70′s-style rock-star locks. Only in San Francisco.

The entire experience can feel scary, especially if you don’t know a soul, and don’t worry if you don’t, chances are, a lot of other students feel the exact same way. But the truth is, you can meet a lot of people at orientation and even make friends if you keep in touch. I strongly advise new students to strike up conversations with each other at their orientation because you don’t want to go through the entire day feeling alone, and, you’ve already got an icebreaker: you’re both at orientation.

Orientation can be fun, it can be stressful and summon all the anxiety and nerves that boil around in your chest and stomach but you have to remember, it’s the very first step into college. You might stumble, you might fall, but either way, orientation walks you through that door. Try to have fun because there might be a killer party, awesome new friends and all-out good times on the other side.
