Compared to high school, it can be harder to make friends in college because you won’t necessarily see the same people every day, or even every week. Nevertheless, finding people who will support and encourage you throughout your time in college is absolutely crucial to your success in the end. From the basics to starting up a conversation or making sure you’ve solidified a new friendship, here are a few tips on making friends.

START TALKING EARLY ON

The first few weeks of classes are a perfect opportunity to begin talking to new people. Most of your other classmates don’t have very many (if any) friends in a particular class, so you might as well start off with a simple Hey, I’m …, nice to meet you. Do this every time you come into class and before you know it, you’ll be asking about each other’s day and actually having conversations.

You’ve probably been asked at least 3 of these everyday since starting the semester, no matter what year you are, but that’s ok! They’re easy to answer and a great way to start up convo with anybody. Examples: What’s your major? Where are you from? What year are you? Why’d you pick this school? Why’d you take this class? What are you hoping to become one day?

Because 9 times out of 10, whoever you’re asking to study with won’t straight up deny you. Even if it’s only for an hour, use the time to both learn from each other and learn ABOUT each other.

JOIN AN ORGANIZATION

Get involved. There are so many ways to meet people in college. It really is up to you to go out and make the effort. Whether it’s an on-campus group or getting to know the coffee-shop go-ers, find the people you have something in common with because it’s easy to talk about what you like!

That’s what we all want deep down right? – a friend who is genuine and actually seems to care about our success and well-being! If you think saying “hi” to someone every day you have class together will develop into a great friendship, your expectations may be a little high. Make it a point to learn something new about the classmate you’re aiming to be friends with each time you talk to them. Slowly but surely, they’ll begin to realize you’re legit and are someone to be trusted.
