Still confused about what waste goes in which bin? There are a lot of college students (including myself) who still aren’t quite sure about whether something is compost safe or meant to go in the trash. This blog will give you a quick run down on the differences between the three. Use this as a guide the next time you’re unsure about the items you’re throwing. Soon enough you’ll be a pro and can show your friends how cool you are for knowing what goes where. They’ll thank you for it, and the Earth will definitely too.

Composting

What Is It?

Long story short, if something goes into composting, it is a biodegradable, organic waste (meaning it can be broken down). It is sent to a location where it is then decomposed, and as a result, recycled into nutrient-rich soil that can be used to fertilize plants and crops. How awesome is that? Basically a continuous cycle that puts nothing to waste.

Compostable Items: Vegetables; Some Paper; Fruit Rinds; Grains; Coffee Filters/Tea Bags/Looseleaf Tea.

In other words, MANY items can be thrown into the compost bin. For the most part, almost any food (except cooked, meat, and dairy) is compostable.

Recycling

What Is It?

I’m sure you know what this is. Like composting, recycling turns waste into more recyclable, useful material. From one item to the next, this process helps reduce the number of overall waste in the world. As the saying goes: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

What Can Be Recycled? Metals; Paper; Aluminum Cans, Metal Cans; Bottles and Jars; Glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs; Electronic Devices (SPECIAL NOTE: Devices have a special recycling process, and should be recycled separately from regular waste).

Trash

What Is It?

Everything that’s left! Hopefully after recycling and composting there won’t be much to throw away. Remember, any non-biodegradable and non-recyclable waste goes to trash, which then go to landfills. And, unfortunately, landfills are beginning to fill up, so where will our waste go to now?

Just knowing a little more about composting, recycling, and trash can make you a better informed citizen. It’s not an issue in the US, but it’s a world issue that could ultimately become a bigger problem in the future. And as statistics have shown, waste issues can be avoided. So start doing these things now if you think it’s important.

Hint: It’s pretty important.
