How do employers know if a recent college graduate has enough skills, experience and knowledge to perform in a professional workplace? Graduating with top honors may not be enough as the Council for Aid to Education (CAE), a non-profit organization in New York has created a college exit exam to discover just how well-prepared the graduates are, and to give employers a better idea at who they’re hiring, reported the Chicago Tribune.

The exam is called Collegiate Learning Assessment Plus and according to the Council for Aid to Education, over 700 institutions in the United States and around the world use the exam. U.S. schools that have signed up for the use of the exam include some Massachusetts, California and Texas state universities. The test aims to increase student metrics so faculty and administrators can make better “decisions about grading, scholarships, admissions, or placement.” CAE conducts these tests by presenting students with real-world situations that test the students’ skills in issue, problem or conflict is identified and then address the it.

The Council for Aid to Education was established in 1952 and was one of the first organizations to give statistics on private giving to higher education and has become a leader in collegiate statistics.

Just last week, President Barack Obama proposed ideas on cutting the cost of college and managing debt after graduation with a new college ranking system. Combined with the Collegiate Learning Assessment Plus exit exam, it may be easier for employers to know exactly what type of workers students are and possibly help put more college grads to work sooner rather than later.
