Task 1:

The bar chart and the table give the information of the life expectancy and its changes in Japan, United States, South Korea and Indonesia between 1953 and 2008.

范文:

The bar chart reveals the average life expectancy in four countries in 2008, and the table presents the changes of these figures compared with those in 1958.

In 2008, Japanese lived longer than those in the other three countries with life expectancy at 82 years. The numbers in United States and South Korea were also high, reaching the age of 79 and 77 respectively. Nevertheless, people in Indonesia only lived on approximately 73 years.

By contrast to the absolute life span, the increase among these four countries was another case, with Indonesian showing the most dramatic growth among the listed countries by 15.7 years compared with 1958. Similarly, people in United States lived 12.5 years longer than five decades ago. However, Japan, in spite of the longest life span in 2008, only witnessed a marginal growth of 3.5 years, which was just slightly more than that in Korea (3 years).

Overall, while the developed countries had much longer life expectancies than Indonesia in 2008, Indonesia had presented the greatest rise in longevity.

Task 2

With the increasing demand for energy sources of oil and gas, people are looking for sources of oil and gas in remote and untouched places. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of damaging such areas?

提纲:

disadvantages

1,比现有油气田的开采难度增加 ;

2,环境的恶化,威胁人类生存。

advantages

保证石油公司的利益,但是开采困难导致的油价上涨缩小了利润,而且也牺牲了人类长期利益

范文:

The demand for energy resource increases with the global population and the modern lifestyle featuring excessive material consumption. As the current reserve of oil and gas fields is nearly exhausted, the potential in those remote areas is being targeted. I personally believe that such attempt is equal to suicide.

The reason for some fields untouched from exploitation is because of the extreme adverse conditions, to be specific, deep oceans, soaring mountains, extensive desert and flourishing rainforests. In these places, oil and gas exploitation could cost substantially in terms of machines and human labour and even modern sophisticated technology may also be challenged. These are not the worst yet. These places are the last intact treasures of human beings and the loss of them would threaten human survival. The rainforests are the lung of the earth, providing oxygen to life in various forms; the oceans occupy 70% of the surface of our planet and they are the home of thousands of wild marine species.

Unfortunately, some short-sighted businesses are blind to these dangers and they choose to pursue short term profits. Especially some oil companies that monopolize the market and manipulate the price tend to maintain their power in this domain by encouraging the utilization of traditional energy instead of renewable and clean ones such as solar and hydro energy. However, their selfish deed is unwise based on the fact that exploitation of oil and gas in those regional areas is expensive, which would result in the increase of petrol price, hence losing the original advantage over other energy sources. In addition to individual companies, the whole humanity would suffer from long term disasters or extinction in the worst scenario.

In summary, advancing to remote areas to explore energy sources is far from prudence given the consequences to human species, including the deterioration of the social and natural environment. Therefore, such practice should be strictly prohibited.
