"given to"= likely to do something(可能会...;动辄....)

"He is given to yelling at people when things don't go his way."

"ahead of style" 走在流行之前

"I don't think Karen is going to wear this dress to the party because usually she is ahead of style."

"in the works" = being prepared(正在着手准备)

"My new album is still in the works.It will come out in April."

"a fiver" = a five-dollar bill(五元超票)

"Can you give me change of a fiver? I need five singles (五张一元票),please."

"fill out" 填写(表格)

“Fill out this form please."

"a debt of gratitude" 重重地欠一笔(人情),无限感激

“She has done so much for my family and we owe her a debt of gratitude.”

take the blame for " = (就...)认错

"I can't take the blame for something I didn't do."

"alcohol poisoning" (酒精中毒)

"When a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time,alcohol poisoning can result."

out of tune" = out of line,not in agreement or harmony

(不和谐/不协调)

"His ideas of what we should do about this situation are so out of tune with mine."

"compatible with" = (of humans,software etc.)able to coexist

(能共处的,可相容的)

“I fight with my wife quite often and I don't think we are compatible with each other at all."

"Is this system compatible with Windows XP?"

"poles apart" 相差十万八千里,相差甚远

"Your idea of fun and mine are poles apart!"

"cry happy tears" = cry with joy (高兴得流下了眼泪)

“Tracy cried happy tears when she heard that she got the job."

"burst into tears" = break down in tears (潸然泪下)

"My mother burst into tears when the police told her (that) I was arrested."

"get through to" = to succeed in making someone lisen

or understand (说话管用)

"Can you talk your daughter out of dating that man? I can't get through to her."

"give sb the benefit of the doubt" = to believe a person

is innocent rather than guilty when you are not sure

(没拿到证据时)不要乱怀疑人

"David was the only person who had known where the money on one's hands" = in one's care or responsiblity

(责任落在...肩/手上)

"With four kids on my hands,I am too busy to help you out right now." was before it was stolen,but we gave him the benefit of the doubt."

"in good hands" 由高手/行家打理

"Dr.Stone is one of the best eye doctors in this country, so your father is in good hands."

"a disgrace to" 给...丢脸,给带来...坏名誉

"You are nothing but a disgrace to your family!"

"in matters of the heart" 在爱情上

"Sophia is not as lucky as her sister in matters of the heart."

"on a tight budget" (费用)预算紧

"No,I don't have money for that because I am on a tight budget this month."

"a hangover" = the severe headache felt several hours

after drinking too much alcohol(宿醉)

"I got a terrible hangover!"

"so far today (this week,this month,etc.)"

B:So far today you've asked me the same question five times.Everything is fine!

"I am pooped!" = very exhausted(累坏了)

"My goodness!I didn't think this job would be so much work.I'm pooped!"

"out of order" = out of whack (出毛病/出故障)

"My printer is out of order again."

"go steady with (sb)" = date someone on a regular basis

(与...)固定交往/确定恋爱关系

"Andrew went steady for four years before he got married."

"give sb a tongue-lashing" 把.....狠骂一顿

"Harry gave me a tongue-lashing for not telling him when I came back from England."

"by candlelight" 靠点蜡烛;烛光下

"Because of the power outage,we have to do everything by candlelight."

A:You look more beautiful by candlelight!

B:Oh,craps!

"on record" 有案可稽,留下记录

"Many climatologists have predicted (that) 2007 will be the warmest year on record."

“crash the gate”(无门票乱闯;没被邀请却硬厚着脸皮要进)

"fall for" (信以为真,受骗) = be deceived by

"What a fool I was to fall for your stupid excuse!"

"it's not on the menu" 菜单上没有,我们不弄这个

"I am sorry it's not on the menu.Can you order something else instead?"

"leave sb out in the cold" = exclude someone,fail to

inform someone about something(把..排斥在外,没通知到..)

"I wasn't invited to Shirley's birthday party.They left me out in the cold."

"in a jiffy" = in a short time, in a moment(马上,过一会)

"Don't worry!I will get everything ready in a jiffy."

"tide sb over" = help someone get though a difficult time

(帮...度过难关/抵挡一阵)

"Your money certainly will tide me over.Thanks!"

"work out" (多指在健身房)锻炼身体,做运动

"I enjoy working out,shopping and going out with my friends."

"you don't know the value of a dollar" 不懂得珍惜

每一块钱,胡乱花钱

"You don't know the value of a dollar.Your credit card is over the limit again,son!"

"keep track" 时刻把握/掌握;做有统计/纪录

"Ted managed to keep track of his business by telephone when he was away in Paris."

"I don't keep track of my money at all."

hit the slopes" = go skiing

"I am going to hit the slopes with my family in Colorado sometime next month."

first things first" = the most important things must be taken care of first(最重要的事情要最先做,要有轻重缓急)

"Please do your homework before you watch TV,young lady. First things first!"

"first thing in the morning" = do it before anything else in the morning (明天)一大早首先...

"Call me first thing in the morning because I can't talk to you now."

"trade...in" = exchange something (esp.a used car,etc.)

in part payment for another 抵价购买

"I am going to trade my Toyota in for a Chinese car."

"fill...to capacity" 满员,满容量

"The theater was filled to capacity in less than 20

minutes."

"at capacity" 已全力以赴,已达最大负荷量

"We are at (full) capacity now,so you won't get any help from us in the next two weeks."

"consumable food" (无皮无核或无骨的)可以全部吃掉的食物

"At the party,Mary and her friends only ate consumable food."

"perishable food" 易坏食品,新鲜食品

"Please never leave perishable food out of refrigeration over two hours."

"take ... for granted" = cease to appreciate ...through

familiarity (因到手已久或过于熟悉了解所以已经)不当一回事了

"You take my sister for granted! Someday she'll meet up with someone else and you'll be sorry!"

dress up" 穿得漂亮,盛装,例句:

"I like to wear this dress because it's pretty and not too fancy,so nobody at work will think I am too dressed up."

"get a hold of" (电话)抓得住,找得到

"I called your sister a few times yesterday but couldn't get a hold of her."

"dine and dash" (不给钱)吃完就趁机溜

"He once dined and dashed at a steak house when he was a poor student."

"Tom was arrested by the police shortly after yesterday's restaurant dine-and-dash."

for one's own good" = for one's own sake/benefit(为...自己好)

"You better quit smoking for your own good."

"I have to stop doing that for my own benefit."

give sb away" (让某人)露马脚

A:Wow!How do you know I am from England?

B:Your accent gave you away,sir.

"stand sb up" = 失约,让人空等

"You stood me up yesterday and I hope this will not happen again next week."

"speak one's mind" = speak frankly,speak up,speak out (说话太直率)

"Some of her co-workers don't like her because she speaks her mind."

"freshen up" = refresh oneself by washing,changing clothes,etc.(盥洗更衣,洗洗换身衣服)

"Mom,my new girlfriend is coming here in a little while. am going to freshen up and I'll be coming down in 10 minutes."

"in distress" = in danger (身处险境,面临危险)

A: Thank you very much for pulling that boy out of the water!

B: Don't mention it.We all should do something about it if we see someone in distress."

Dutch uncle:唠叨的总是教训别人的人

常用形式:Stop talking to me like a Dutch uncle! 用不着你来教训我

"know for sure" (确切知道)

How do you know for sure (that) you're going to get that job,Tony?

A: What does "cop" stand for,Mr. Rodwell?

B: I think it's "Constable On Patrol",but I don't know for sure.I could be wrong.

"break up with (sb)" = bring to an end,break it off

跟...吹 /分手

His girlfriend just broke up with him last week."

"come down with" = begin to suffer from(a disease)得病

"I can't see you today because I have come down with the flu."

out of anger" 一气之下,气恼中,火头上

"I just hung up on him out of anger."

"economize on..." (在..方面)节省,节约

"In order to buy those books,I have to economize on food this month."
